On the 12th hour of Christmas...
After a discussion with a friend, it suddenly hit both of us. Our houses have chimneys too. It's also dirty and sooty and makes Santa filthy.
Yes, Ladies and Gentlemen, we have...the rubbish chute.
So, before you go to sleep, remember to hang your Christmas stocking by the rubbish chute. But if you're reading this, don't bother. Santa had left, and even if he haven't you're already on the 'naughty' list for staying up so late.
No wonder I don't have any presents this year. Either that or my dog ate Santa up.
Merry Christmas my dears!

Do They Know It's Christmas?
Amanda probably need to finalise one last time as soon as everything is planned out to ensure the party goes well. No invitation cards though, according to her, so please RSVP with her.
I know this is going to sound a little insane, but how about another party on the 30th and a stayover on the 31st to 1st Jan? So it's like a whole 4 days of non-stop partying at someone's house. If response is good then we could find someone to open up their houses for those interested. Any ideas?
One last thing, please spread the word.
Merry Christmas!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!
Min Jie wanted a class chalet on the 4th of Jan at Aloha for 1 day 0 night because that's the only day available. It's not booked yet, partly because I'm lazy and I need a majority vote because it involves money.
Alternatively, Amanda suggested a Christmas party/outing. We could draw names and buy a present for the person we had drawn and go do crazy stuffs like visit Santa at the shopping mall.
Whatever the decision, I am hoping that we could come to a decision by the end of November. The class needs an outing and pictures outside of the boring school. For the chalet, it costs around $200 so that accounts to around $10 per person. I believe all of your wallets have more money than the class fund right now.
Oh, we still have SL project.
PS: Next Cold War seminar on the 26 of November. Register here.

Class SLP: Fort Canning's history
Just a stone's throw away from one of the busiest shopping areas in Singapore is a cool, shady nature walk around a hill which has a history that goes back 700 years. Relax by taking a stroll through the park situated on the hill or immerse yourself in this tranquil green oasis while commuting from Orchard Road to the Civic District or the Singapore River.Steeped in history, Fort Canning Hill was once known as "Forbidden Hill". This is because Malays in the 19th century believed that it was the seat of royalty for rulers of Temasek (or "Sea Town", an old name for Singapore) in the 1300s. Later, Singapore's colonial leaders made their residences there, and the hill became a military base during the Second World War. Today, ancient relics dating back to the 14th century have been unearthed and the Fort Gate, remnant of the fortress built in the 1860s, is a reminder of Singapore's colonial past.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Archaeological excavations prove the vitality of Fort Canning Hill's history as far back as the 14th century when it was the seat of the Malay Kingdom, Temasek. According to the Malay Annals, the site was chosen for settlement by Sri Tri Buana, ruler of Temasek and the one reputed to have seen the fabled lion for which he named the island 'Singapura' (Lion City).
Beleaguered by attacks from the Siamese and Majapahit, the last known ruler of Temasek, Iskandar Syah, fled from the settlement. Except for minimal portside activity, little was known of the island until the arrival of Sir Stamford Raffles in 1819. The Malay locals who received Raffles pointed him to the hill they called Bukit Larangan, which means in Malay 'Forbidden Hill'. They were fearful of climbing the hill as they thought the palace of their ancestor kings had once stood there. Raffles had part of the hill cleared of jungle, revealing the ruins of ancient brick buildings, which gave support to the legends. Because of the beautiful view the hill commanded, Raffles chose to build his bungalow and to establish the first botanical garden here in 1822. Until mid-19th century, Singapore's governors were residents here; thus the epithet 'Government Hill'.
Around 1860, the colonial government turned the hill into a fort bearing the name of Viscount Charles John Canning, Governor-General and the first Viceroy of India. From that time until the 1970s, Fort Canning was used as a military base, first by the British, then by the Japanese during Second World War, and lastly by the Republic's armed forces. Once the forbidden hill of ancient Malay royalty and later the Far East Command Centre of the British, today's Fort Canning Park beckons visitors to a tranquil, green oasis. Capitalising on the rich historical assets of the old citadel, the National Parks Board has revitalised Fort Canning into a unique city park with many popular art performances, events and concerts to serve the populace of Singapore.
:D
Class SLP: Fort Canning and its attractions
Fort Canning is the most historic part of Singapore. Malay and Chinese historical records point to this hill as the centre of a kingdom that arose around AD1300. The royal palace of ancient Malay rulers probably stood on the summit of this once "Forbidden Hill". Begin your 14th century walk near the Keramat Iskandar Syah. Take a leisurely stroll back in time, to the era of the five kings and the golden age of 14th-century Singapore.
The Keramat Iskandar Syah
Meaning "a sacred place" in Malay, a Keramat is the traditional burial ground of a revered leader. It is uncertain who was buried here, though some people believe this to be the resting place of Iskandar Syah, a ruler of Temasek. A 14th century-styled Malay roof called a "pendopo", supported by twenty wooden pillars carved in a fighting cock motif of Javanese origin, shelters this structure.
The Archaeological Dig & Exhibition
Archaeological research at Fort Canning began in 1984. Thousands of artifacts have since been uncovered, confirming the historical significance of Fort Canning even before the arrival of the British in 1819. Most likely an area used by palace craftsmen manufacturing items of glass and gold in the past, the Archaeological Dig showcases an actual archaeological excavation site, the only such exhibition in modern Singapore.
The Parit Singapura
Ancient Malay and Chinese sources mentioned that Singapore had a moat and wall. It ran along the edge of a stream called "Fresh Water Stream", which was probably the Parit Singapura (Moat of Singapore). This has now completely disappeared. Part of the moat run up to the side of Fort Canning Hill, but whether this trench here is related to the ancient moat is not known with certainty.
The Singapore River
The western part of Fort Canning Hill offers some relaxing views of the Singapore River, the hub of trade for old Singapore. At the mouth of the river once stood the Singapore Stone (a fragment of which is now displayed at National Museum of Singapore). The Singapore Stone is linked to the story of the legendary 14th-century strongman, Badang. He is said to have thrown a stone from the audience hall of the king at Fort Canning Hill to the mouth of the Singapore River.
19th Century Walk
The 19th Century Walk links Fort Canning Park's key historic features which recaptures Singapore's first century. Begin your walk at Dobbie Rise, near the roundabout and information kiosk.
The Fort Gate
The Gate, the adjoining wall and the Sally Port are all that remain of the fortress which occupied this hill from 1861 to 1926 when it was demolished to make way for the reservoir. Some 400 coolies were mobilised in leveling 3 hectares of hilltop and constructing the elaborate fort complex of barrack blocks, hospital, gunpowder magazines and supporting artillery. In 1867, the fort had seven 68-pounder guns, eight 8-inch guns, two 13-inch mortars and some 14-pounder cannonades. A cannon was fired 3 times a day (at 5 a.m., 1 p.m. and 9 p.m.) in colonial times to announce the hour. Be sure to look behind the Fort Gate's massive wooden door for the narrow stairway leading to the roof.
Fort Canning Green
This used to be the old Christian Cemetery until 1865. The entrances to the cemetery are marked by gateways designed by Captain Charles Edward Faber, Superintending Engineer. The gateways are the earliest examples of work in Gothic Revival style to be introduced in Singapore. Pause for a moment and imagine the famous men and women who gave their lives to the young colony ... and the children who lost theirs, their short histories embedded in the walls that line the former cemetery.
The Spice Garden
This is the site of Raffles' original experimental and botanical garden, the brainchild of Nathaniel Wallich, a Dane who became superintendent of the Royal Gardens at Calcutta in 1815. He came to Singapore in 1882 and wrote to Raffles to recommend that a botanical and experimental garden be established.
Raffles Terrace
Raffles chose to build his bungalow here for the beautiful view it commanded, and the site served as residence for a long line of Governors. As you stroll along, imagine the superb view of the town below, bustling with horses and carriages, bullock carts, sailing vessels, and the vast panorama of harbour folk plying their wares back in 19th-century Singapore.
Battle Box
The Battle Box is located some 9 metres underground, in one of the bunkers in Fort Canning Park. It was the largest military operations complex in Singapore and was part of the Malaya Command Headquarters during World War II. The facility is now managed by The Legends Fort Canning Park.Through the use of specially arranged audio and video effects, high quality animatronics and specially crafted figurines, we bring visitors back to the morning of 15 February 1942, when the surrender decision was made by British Officers and Singapore fell to the Japanese. At the Battle Box, complete all recruitment procedures and an Orderly (Guide) will take you on a fully guided tour. Surrounded by bombing outside The Battle Box, you will walk through the complex and experience the recreated events in its various rooms.
ASEAN Sculpture Garden
These sculptures were created in 1981 for the ASEAN Sculptures Symposium in Singapore. As a symbol of ASEAN unity and cooperation, each member country - the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore - donated a sculpture to this garden in 1982. Brunei added its contribution in 1988 when it became an ASEAN member.

What is it about?
The structure that we are supposed to build is to be related to the theme. And it is to be a scene of the future in 2030. An AJC Town. Also, due to our artistic nature, there will be a tinge of Arts inside this.
The following is a rough sketch of the design:
In case you are wondering what those 'fences' are. They are something like this:http://fundyreformed.files.wordpress.com/2007/12/racialharmony.jpg
The Central Building
The Open Air Concert Hall
I know the words are abit small. Just try to see ;)
To help you all better visualise, it is something like the below picture:http://blog.sashamakila.com/public/Cologne/.Koln_concert_hall_m.jpg
The Pyramid Those symbols represent ways to appreciate art. The eye means through sight, curly lines means smell, while the musical note means hearing. The blank side means that we must keep our minds open so as to absorb new perspectives about art.
Heres another picture of how it should turn out:http://www.ianandwendy.com/OtherTrips/Egypt/Cairo/Pyramids/Giza_Pyramids_Cairo_268__6A_1293.jpg
Now, you may ask what does all that structures represent? Well, it is related to our Class Vision. And if that slipped your mind, here it is again:
Building ties to break boundaries.
Creating mutual respect, weaving happy memories.
Our everlasting goal.
The 'fence' thingy is to signify the building of ties, while those sections that are protruding out shows the action of breaking boundaries. Since it also looks like the 'racial harmony' thingy, the element of mutual respect comes in. The concert hall holds mass performances, every individual contributes to the overall enjoyment of the audience. Hence, happy memories are weaved. Pyramid are from the ancient timess and for it to last till 2030, its indeed everlasting.
On the more technical aspect, how does this fit into the frame of a future 2030?
The Central Building is an overall command for the Arts Faculty of the future. It is the main body that is dealing with every single aspect of Arts in the future. An Open Air Concert Hall has the ability to transmit its performances to audience all around the world. They may be performing here, but people can watch it through a hologram globally. The Pyramid is capable of uprooting itself and moving from place to place. Everybody will start their journey of appreciating the arts from the 1st level, the base. As they work harder, their knowledge will increase and thus the elites will proceed to the tip of the Pyramid.
One potential problem that will occur is that we will run out of time in building every single sections of this structure. On Thursday we will see how it goes and maybe edit/modify the sections so as to complete it on time.
The allocation of manpower is another thing. Every section (Central Building/Pyramid/Concert Hall), will need around 7 persons to be doing it. We will settle this on Thursday itself. If you are enthu and want to volunteer for a section, feel free to do so.
Yup, I guess thats all. =)

Every Once In A While...
Apparently, someone up there has took pity on our current miserable situation for history and provided us with the solution for our promos and the A levels.
The History Channel, the National University of Singapore, the Asia Research Institute and the National Library Board have come together to organise a series of seminars on "The Cold War in Southeast Asia".
The best part?
Admission is free but they are available on first come, first served basis.
The even better part?
The first lecture is on the 24 of September and the following day happens to be our History paper.
The first lecture, titled "The Cold War: New Approaches and Findings", seems especially interesting and informative for content knowledge and should be great for some last-minute studying.
Registration is required so maybe we can go as a class or something. Even if it doesn't help for promos I'm sure it will help for A Levels one way of another. Whether this is a risk or not depends on how you see it but I feel it's one worth taking.
Seats are limited so we should hurry and confirm numbers and register.
Registration and additional information can be found here:
http://historychannelasia.com/coldwar/seminar.aspx
Lastly, it's only one more week. Press on!

This is long overdue and I apologise for it.
Other than that, all the best for your studies.
Remember, as a class, we all have the obligation to promote. As cliche as it might sound, we are 1 class, not 23 individuals.
Take care!

All That is Left
They are all lefties!
which may or may not mean they are communist in nature.
August 13 is International Left Handers Day. This day is meant to raise awareness for the difficulties lefties faced in a right-dominant world
Google this up if you don't believe me. It's really a recognised international event. They even have a website for it over here.
Anyway, videos are up at the same page. Refer to previous posts for details.
Other than that, have a nice day.

Please give me time for the videos as the size for each of them are terribly huge and the upload/download time will be extremely torturous. I'm in the midst of scaling them down to make it more less straining on our computers. I'll post an update here when I'm done with it.
Lastly, sorry to spoil your mood but word has it from Jonathon that there will be PW make-up lesson on Tuesday at 2.45 to 3.45. You might want to confirm it with him.
Other than that, have a nice weekend and take care.

Change Blog Skin !
As you can see, I changed the blog skin. The theme is Dream. Its very broad but it allows us to think widely, which is (sometimes) good too. What is your Dream? Are you on the right track that leads you to your Dream? If not, are you going to do anything about it?
the most important thing right now would be working towards about promos, which
actually, isn't that far anyway.
Taken from the previous post. Well, its a fact that promos are crucial and not far away (16 years just went pass like that, how can time be slow?) .
BUT, remember to give yourself a break! Yeah.
Time-Table for PW tmw.
0745-0915 - Class Discussions @ 1146
0915-0945 - Break
0945-1215 - Lecture on Team Dynamics @ Audi
*I know its a little bit late now, my apologies. The above is purely based on my memory, maybe prone to errors =/
IT'S OVER...NOT!
Putting studies aside, and in an effort to keep this blog alive, here's something that might cheer you up. I don't know whether any of you have read this before, but it's worth a laugh.

Shakespeare on Love: Questions to reflect on
1. What are the functions of soliloquies?
a. how is plot affected by soliloquies?
b. when a character engages in a soliloquy, what kind of relationship is established between the audience and the character?
c. what other uses of soliloquies are there?
2. how is LOVE explored in shakespeare's plays? (e.g To Iago, love is synonymous with lust in Othello)
3. what constitute tragedy/comedy? Think about the elements that contribute to the tragic or comic effect of a play.
4. APPEARANCE V.S REALITY - what different aspects of this theme are explored?

Admin stuff (:
There are a few matters:
1) Class something: I know we're all still getting to know each other and all but if we were to make a class tee at the end of this year, we would have missed all the oppurtunities to wear it in J1! Its up to all of you though. Some suggestions are tees, shoelaces(err),wristbands, badges to put on bag or smthing, shoes(we're going a tad bit extreme here aren't we) and bags(good joke eh). yeah. oh and i suggest a jacket :D
so anyways, if most of you are game for it, then please let me know this week. we'll finalise it and get the class something asap alright! Sherilyn is very good at visual art, perhaps she can, with others of course, help with the design!
2) Class Leader responsibility allocation:
~Sophia is in charge of welfare, i.e. arranging for class gathering etc
~Zi Ming is in charge of the class SLP(Service Learning Project) and other class initiated projects in general
~I am in charge of college events and celebrations, i.e. attendance blah blah
So..in case you guys need to clarify anything for specific stuff like the above, you know who to look for :)
3)NYAA Gold applicants, CIP rep Amanda and Zi Ming will need to sit down and decide on which charitable organisation the class wants to base the project on. Perhaps you all can call some shortlisted organisations and ask them for their needs and see how best we can do the project. We need to send a group of 4 for representing the class for the citibank sponsorship interviews etc. We need to send all these particulars by 20th April. Zi Ming, you have the paper right? If not, I have an extra copy, I'll pass it to you on Monday!
Thanks for taking the time to read all the dreary stuff above and to Zi Ming, for making this blog and making our lives easier!
See you soon people (:
Have a good weekend.
